Shoring Process Begins for Bavaro

By Luke | August 18, 2008

As you may have heard or seen, the shoring process has begun. The shoring process involves drilling holes, placing steel beams in the holes, and then inserting boards between the beams. While many believe the shoring is being done to keep Ruffner from sliding into the new building, the real purpose is to hold the dirt in place while the hole is dug for the foundation of Bavaro. I have been told that this hole will go approximately 20 feet down from the current surface of the old R3 parking lot.

There have been some delays related to moving the sewage and storm drains that go under the location of the new loading dock. As a result a temporary locking dock is going to be constructed that will connect to Ruffner through the current barricade in front of the Curry Cafe/vending machine entrance to Ruffner.

Bavaro Update

By Luke | August 11, 2008

Although activity appears to have slown down a little over the last several days, work is progressing on schedule — it has been reported that overall construction is now 7% complete! Work still continues on creating the new loading dock entrance. Preparations are being made for the installation of shoring. The drilling for the shoring should begin next week.

Construction Update

By Luke | August 4, 2008

This week work continues on creating the  new loading dock entrance. Now that the Dell parking lot has been paved and is open, the small Donely construction trailer has been replaced with a new much larger trailer on the southeast end of the Dell lot. This new trailer will allow for more on-site meetings.

Of greater interest, work is beginning at the main construction site on creating the footers for the foundation of the building. Large steel beams have been delivered and the site cleared to begin this work.

Dell Lot Reopens

By Luke | July 28, 2008

As those that park in the Dell Lot have already learned, the lot is now reopened. Work still continues on the new entrance to the loading dock that will be under the walkway around Ruffner. In a related activity, they have removed the final set of stairs and begun the demolition around the old loading dock.

Pedestrian Bridge Re-surfacing

By Luke | July 24, 2008

In response to several inquires about what is happening with the pedestrian bridge between Ruffner and Grounds, I have listed the memo below that was sent by Sue Wharam on 7/15/08. Note this activity is independent of the Bavaro Hall project and is part of the University’s normal maintenance program.

The Ruffner Hall Pedestrian Bridge is being re-surfaced and will be out-of-service for two weeks starting on Monday, July 21, 2008.During this time please note that foot traffic should be redirected as follows:

·       Approaching from Newcomb Road - proceed south on Newcomb Road; turn right going across McCormick Bridge to West Grounds and proceed to desired destination.

·        Approaching from Ruffner Hall – proceed to McCormick Road and turn left onto McCormick Bridge then north on Newcomb Road to desired destination (Central Grounds).

We apologize for this inconvenience and thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

Construction Report

By Luke | July 22, 2008

This past week significant progress was made on regrading the Dell parking lot. The entrance has been moved to the north end of the lot and new curbs installed. It appears that they will be ready to resurface the lot in the near future.

On the south end of the lot, work continues on creating the new entrance to the loading dock area. where the structure around the underground utilities is being reinforced with concrete.

Over on the main construction site, work continues on installing the utility infrastructure for the building.

Work continues this week on regrading the Dell parking lot,  constructing the new entrance to the loading dock, and installing the utilities along Emmet street. This week I have started to populate the Construction Schedule link on the right side menu of this page. I have posted the items for this summer related to site work, loading dock relocation, and parking lot regrading. The schedule has three columns. The first indicates the task, the second when work is scheduled to begin on that task, and the third when the task is scheduled to be completed.

CONSTRUCTION UPDATES June 27th

By Luke | June 27, 2008

1. The asbestos abators will be working in the plenum at the loading dock this Saturday. This will require shutting off air handler number 4 from Saturday at 7AM to Sunday early morning. This air handler serves the auditorium and a couple of the offices near the auditorium. Other areas of the building will remain fully operational. There will also be a medium temperature hot water shut down at that time as well, but this only affects the heat for the building and so that should not be a problem.

2. Donley’s will need to close one lane of Emmett Street (reducing it to one lane of traffic only) to install the fire hydrant needed next to the Bavaro Hall construction project. This work will be done at night only (as required by the City). This work will start on July 1st from 6:00pm to midnight and finish on July 2nd from 6:00pm until midnight. Flagmen will be present to control the flow of traffic.

Temporary Lane Closure

By Luke | June 24, 2008

In order to install a new water hydrant on Emmet Street, it will be necessary to close one lane of traffic. Because Emmet Street next to Bavaro Hall construction has two lanes of moving traffic, a turn lane and a bike lane, this work will be completed by maintaining two moving lanes of traffic. The street will have cones, flagmen, and be restriped during this time period. The work will be complete in 10 days. The closure of the turn lane will take place June 25, 2008 and reopen July, 7th, 2008.
