Curry Labs & Classrooms Software Needs

Curry's Educational Technologies Office (ETO) maintains 12 workstations in 12 Ruffner classrooms (including the three sections of the auditorium) and one computer lab (209). Five Ruffner classrooms are maintained by U.Va.'s ITC (see below).

It is time to start making plans for spring semester 2009.  Curry Labs and Classrooms use this time to start preparing for your teaching needs by refreshing the software on Curry classroom computers. We need your help in making the software available for next semester responsive to your teaching needs. We ask that you have all inputs to ETO no later than November 15th by using the request form linked to below.

Please note that if you are teaching in one of the ITC-supported classrooms (see above), you must have submited your software request form by November 1, 2008! (ITC software request form)

There are different areas within Curry where software varies according to specific needs.

Areas that you must request changes from ITC by November 1st:

The ITC classrooms are the 5 large rooms with a unified classroom software load on them. What software is installed on these computers iscontrolled by the ITC software group. These rooms are: 175, 187, 223, 281, and 283. Curry does not put any software on these computers that is not part of the ITC software load. If you would like to see what is currently on these computers or request additions to the software, please contact ITC using the following links:

The ITC lab in room 277 has a unified labs software load that is also controlled by the ITC software group. If you would like to add software to this lab please use the link provided above.

Areas that Curry labs and classrooms can change:

Note: All of the Curry computers listed below contain the following software:

  • Microsoft Windows XP
  • Microsoft Office Suite
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer
  • Mozilla Firefox

If you require anything beyond the four sets of programs listed above, please fill out the software request form and indicate the location of the computers on which you need it loaded.

General Classroom Build (non ITC):
All other classrooms in Ruffner Hall and the two in Memorial Gym have one standard set of software loaded on them. Any software you request under the classroom general build will be put on all of the classroom machines.

Room 241 Classroom Build:
Additional math and science software can be added to the room 241 mini lab and the 241 instructor’s computer by requesting software additions under the 241 classroom software build. If you have already requested software to be added to the general classroom build there is no need to request it again here.

Room 209 Media and Statistics Lab Build:
The room 209 Media and Statistics lab is a completely separate load of software from all other computers. This room is designed for media projects and classes. It also provides an overflow for students that require Stats software not on the ITC lab computers located in room 277. There are 3 iMacs in the 209 lab if you have software that must be run on these machines. If you need software loaded on these computers please indicate it by checking the 209 Media and Statistics lab build on the software request form.

Laptop Carts:
Two laptop carts are available as portable classrooms. These contain a completely separate load of software from all other computers. These carts are designed mainly for the statistics classes but are also available for special requirements by other classes.

Most students have their own laptops and should be encouraged to use them for general computing needs. You should only request software for the laptops if it essential for your class and can not be satisfied by using other computing resources.
