Connecting to Server on a Macintosh

"Connecting to Server" is one way of connecting your Mac computer to another network-accessible computer, a server, or a network drive so you can copy and paste files between your hard drive and the mapped drive. The network "drive" appears to be part of your computer system and shows up in the Finder window.

In Curry the primary reason someone needs to do this is to access shared disk storage space on a file server located either within Ruffner Hall or available on the general University network. One such example is currydisk, the storage space made available to all Curry faculty and staff. The directions below are specific to mapping a drive to connect to currydisk, but you can use them to connect to any network-accessible drive (such as the Media share space for streaming video) or your Home Directory (xxx).

1. In the Macintosh Finder (OS-X) press Command-K (Go/Connect to Server…)

2. In the Server Connection window that appears enter the address to use to connect to the server where CurryDisk is located:
  Connect to server

3. When the login window appears, enter your computing i.d. and your E-Services password then click on the “OK” button.
  Connect to Server
Note the paths to other shared spaces:
  • Your Home Directory: smb://home1/[computing ID] (e.g., smb://home1/wb6y)
  • Streaming Video: smb://parsley.edschool.virginia.edu/Media

4. When the connection to the server is made, the currydisk directory window will appear on your screen:
  Connect to Server
