Creating a public_html Folder in Home Directory

When you assume a staff or faculty position at the University, you are issued a University computing ID and allocated 2GB of storage space on one of the University's servers. This space is referred to as your Home Directory. Within this Home Directory space, a folder named public_html is automatically created for you. If you have been with the University for a number of years, it is possible that you don’t already have a public_html folder in your Home Directory. You will need to manually create this folder and use an easy-to-use ITC utility to set the file permissions for the new directory so it’s contents can be viewed via the Web. Follow the steps below to accomplish this:

  • Connect to your Home Directory.
  • Create a new folder and name it “public_html” – it must be named exactly like this; the two words are connected with the underscore character by pressing your SHIFT key and the dash (“-“) key (the one to the right of the “0” key).
  • Open your Web browser and go to this URL: https://www.people.virginia.edu/cgi-local/ww/menu
  • Fill in requested information on the login page and continue to the “Unix Account and Group Management” menu page.
  • Click on the link to “Set your World-Wide Web file permissions.”
  • Under the “Directory Permissions” section, you will see a sentence that reads, “To automatically set up your public_html directory to be accessible on the web (via Netscape, Internet Explorer, etc.),” followed by a “click here” link. Click on this link.
  • Nothing will seem to happen, but the ITC utility has just updated the file permissions on the “public_html” folder you created earlier.
  • Now, click on the “Submit Changes” button.
